the Scofflaws

Founded by two ska fanatics Richard "Sammy" Brooks and Mike Drance in the NY/Long Island area in 1987, The Scofflaws' initial intent was to beat the dull routines of everyday living into submission (Richie was driving a school bus back then). Originally named "The New Bohemians," The Scofflaws sold their moniker to Edie Brickell and were able to buy proper instruments and equipment -- and they recorded their classic, debut CD in 1990. The Scofflaws sound is firmly rooted in traditional, horn-powered ska sound pioneered by the legendary Skatalites, but it is mixed with the knowingly campy sensibility of the 50's and 60's. The Scofflaws' most excellent self-titled debut release on Moon Ska in 1990 was marked by cool instrumental covers (Mancini's "Shot in the Dark," Bostic's "Night Train"), great ska originals ("Rudy's Back," "Paul Getty," "Daniel Ortega") and excellent musicianship!

The Scofflaws recently finished work on their yet to be titled third studio album (produced by Dave O'Donnell), which will be released on Moon Ska in the fall of 1998. In the meantime, The Scofflaws keep doing what they do best: playing the ska music they love so well for ska fans all over the US and abroad (the band recently toured Europe!). As usual, the band wants to know: "Are you in the mood for ska?"
